Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge, is a children's or young adults' fantasy novel by Frances Hardinge, published on 8 May by Macmillan in the UK, and by Abrams Amulet in the USA. It won the Robert Holdstock Award for best fantasy novel, and was short-listed for the Carnegie Medal.. The story takes place in the early s, a few years after the First World War.   Cuckoo Song is, just like any book written by Frances Hardinge, a book that works on many levels. In the most elemental way, it is a supremely well-written novel. I’ve said this many times before but it bears repeating: Frances Hardinge’s writing awes me for its creativity, for its sentence structure, for the way she is able to relay so.

In post-World War I England, eleven-year-old Triss nearly drowns in a millpond known as "The Grimmer" and emerges with memory gaps, aware that something's terri.   The name cuckoo comes from the Old French word cucu.
